In 1986, John Espinosa, along with is brothers and sisters formed BELS International Corporation, a door-to-door delivery service of Balikbayan boxes to the Philippines. BELS stands for the combined first letters of the names of the closely-knit family. B is for Baladad, E is for Espinosa, L is for Layug, and S stands for Somintac. Because of the company’s reputation for dependability, Filipino families of Seattle soon warmed up to the company. BELS International’s eventual popularity and patronage made them the leading Balikbayan Box delivery service in the area.
